Xabier Pedruzo Bagazgoitia

Scientist
Research Department, Earth System Modelling Section, Coupled Processes Group

Summary:

Xabi is a scientist working in the Coupled Processes Group within the Earth System Modelling Section since 2021. He is mainly interested in land surface - atmosphere interactions and how these are represented in weather models. In particular, he focuses on the interactions and couplings taking place between the vegetated surface and the lowest part of the atmosphere, i.e. the atmospheric boundary layer, at high spatiotemporal resolutions.

He is currently working, as part of the NextGEMS project, on performing and analysing multidecadal km-scale simulations with the forecast model at ECMWF, the IFS. He is in charge of the implementation and testing of the improvements on the land representation in IFS for NextGEMS. He also supports the modelling efforts at ECMWF within the Destination Earth project.

Professional interests:
  • Vegetation-atmosphere interactions and parametrizations to represent these in NWP.
  • Surface influence on the diurnal evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer.
  • Representation of atmospheric and hydrological processes in land models.
  • Low cloud - surface interactions at very high spatiotemporal scales.
