Météo France, the UK Met Office and ECMWF jointly organised a dedicated workshop on the use of GIS systems in meteorology. The workshop was held at ECMWF, Reading, from 24 to 26 November 2008, and was a great success with over 100 participants from various disciplines and organisations worldwide.

Representatives from commercial and public services included OGC, WMO, INSPIRE, EUROCONTROL and National Weather Services. The aim of this workshop was to review the use of OGC standards in geo-sciences in Europe and worldwide and to promote collaboration between meteorological services in order to define a set of common standards that will enhance interoperability.

The outcome of the workshop is the establishment of a roadmap for further collaborations within the meteorological community and the setting up of testbeds to guarantee interoperability of OGC compliant web services for meteorological data and visualisation. This work should lead to a set of recommendations to WMO.
