Optimising and Enhancing the Integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing Systems (AtlantOS)

AtlantOS is a EU Horizon 2020 project with 62 Partners from 18 Countries. It is a research and innovation project that proposes the integration of ocean observing activities across all disciplines for the Atlantic.

The overarching target of the AtlantOS initiative is to deliver an advanced framework for the development of an integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing System that goes beyond the state-of –the-art, and leaves a legacy of sustainability after the life of the project.

ECMWF  contributes to two of the AtlantOS work packages:

  • WP1 Observing system requirements and design studies

The overall objective of this Work Package is to iteratively apply the systems design processes of the Framework for Ocean Observing to provide a refined scientific system design for an Integrated Atlantic Ocean Observing System (IAOOS) meeting societal objectives.

  • WP7 Data flow and data integration

The work package will assess the impact of AtlantOS networks and their improvements for the Copernicus Marine Service. From these analyses, we will be able to quantify the contributions of AtlantOS in-situ observations for the Copernicus Marine Service and its applications.

ECMWF also carries out a specific study to assess the role of the Atlantic in-situ observing system in the ECMWF seasonal prediction system, as well as Observing System Experiments (OSE) for the Atlantic in-situ observing system in the ECMWF ocean reanalysis system.
