Claudio Iacopino has more than ten years of academic and industrial experience in applying advanced software technologies to the Space sector, especially the Earth Observation and the Operations fields. He is now committed to giving a contribution to the Environmental Services.

Claudio is currently investigating cutting-edge cloud technologies to enable multi-domain workflows across different Clouds and HPC centres. The aim is to expand the user community accessing the large weather and climate data produced at ECMWF and to boost new downstream applications. As part of this effort, Claudio is developing a new notification system for ECMWF data availability, called Aviso, and he is contributing to various international projects such as the LEXIS and HiDALGO EU-funded projects.​

Career background: 

Claudio Iacopino obtained a B.Sc in Computer and Control Engineering in 2005 and an M.Sc. in Software Engineering in 2007 with first class honours at the Università Politecnica delle Marche in Italy. He soon joined the European Space Agency as a Young Graduate trainee at the ESRIN centre, in Rome, where he was involved in the evolution of ground segments for Earth Observation missions. In 2009 Claudio joined the European Space Operations Centre, ESOC, in Germany. Here he worked on AI prototypes for Space Operations and in 2014 he was awarded with a PhD in Automated Space Mission Planning & Scheduling systems by the Surrey Space Centre in the UK, where he explored bio-inspired approaches to efficiently manage large constellation missions. He spent the following five years working for Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd as technical leader in R&D projects concerning ground segments for future large constellation missions.

Special Award Young Innovator 2017 by the MIT Technology Review Italy for Claudio's PhD in optimising large space constellation missions.
